Calakmul & The Rio Bec

We are situated in the midst of the Maya ruins of the Rio Bec area. For instance Xpujil, Chicanna, Hormiguero, Balamku and dozens of other sites are right next door. During your visit you will enjoy their elaborate monster mask temple frontsand false double towers. In addition you will discover all of the beautiful and eclectic features that make the Rio Bec style one of the most sophisticated in the Maya world.

Almost all of our guests spend a day at nearby Calakmul, the vast site in the Peten rainforest that was at the center of Maya history in the Classic period. There you can scale Structure II, the largest Maya pyramid in Mexico. Monkeys, coatimundis, toucans, turkeys, peccaries, deer and even jaguars wander the ruins; for even more nature visit the nearby Bat Cave where a million-bat vortex streams into the jungle at twilight every night.

Classic Maya cities Dzibanche and Kohunlich are also within comfortable driving distance and together make a pleasant day trip.

You can spend days exploring this fascinating and largely untouristed corner of Southern Campeche. Meanwhile most likely you will discover something surprising each day. For exampel, there are new archaeological finds in the jungle here every year.  Certainly we follow them eagerly and occasionally post about them and the archaeologists who make them here.
